The Awards, which were first introduced in 1997, highlight the growing importance of green issues in business and showcase examples of environmental excellence and commitment across the county.

The annual event is run by environmental charity Groundwork Pennine Lancashire and provides businesses in Lancashire with recognition of their achievements in improving environmental performance.

“We were surprised by the amount of interest for this year’s Awards ceremony, especially after the recent economic downturn”, said Mick Smith, Director at Groundwork Pennine Lancashire. “I think this proves that the business community in Lancashire is still as dedicated to environmental good practice as ever and I am proud to be associated with these companies”.

Haslingden based company, Camfil Farr, who provide sustainable filtration solutions to the UK, were crowned winners of the Carbon Management Award for small companies following their achievements in saving over 900 tonnes of CO2 and cost savings of over £155,000 in the past 12 months.

In July this year Camfil Farr were also the first manufacturing company in the UK to achieve certification to the new energy management system standard BS EN 16001. In September 2010 they were the first in the world to be awarded the BSI’s Energy Verification Kitemark, identifying CO2 savings of 14.6% – more than 12% over the requirement.

To date, Camfil Farr has achieved 22% savings in electricity, 30% savings on gas and a 29% saving on vehicle fuel.

Camfil’s Brian Haslam commented:

“The award is recognition of the hard work the team at Camfil have put into reducing energy usage and managing its carbon footprint. On the back of ISO16001 and the ERV Kitemark it serves to demonstrate the we do indeed ‘Practice What We Preach”
